Dr. John Carmichael is the Clinical Chief for the Division of Endocrinology, and serves as the Associate Chief Medical Informatics Officer for Keck Medicine of USC. He joined the Keck as Co-Director for the USC Pituitary Center. He attended Brown University where he obtained a BA in Biomedical Ethics. Dr. Carmichael attended medical school at the Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia and then completed Internal Medicine residency at the Virginia Mason Medical Center at Seattle Washington.
Following his Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at New York University, Dr. Carmichael received specialized training in Translational Research at UCLA. He has received NIH funding for his research in growth hormone feedback in patients with acromegaly and diabetes mellitus.
Dr. Carmichael has written articles for The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Clinical Endocrinology, Pituitary, Endocrine, and Current Opinion in Endocrinology and Diabetes. He is a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Pituitary Society, and the Endocrine Society where he serves on the Endocrine Board Review Committee for the pituitary section.
After finishing his clinical training at NYU in 2004, Dr. Carmichael worked as a clinical researcher at NYU focusing on clinical trials in pituitary disease. He received a grant from Genentech to support his work during this time. In 2006, he went on to work at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in their pituitary center. His work included care of patients with pituitary disease and clinical research in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with pituitary tumors. He held an appointment in the department of medicine at UCLA, devoting his time to the education of medical students, residents and fellows in multiple topics related to pituitary disorders. In 2014, Dr. Carmichael joined the faculty at the Keck School of Medicine of USC where he is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine. Dr. Carmichael is available to see patients at the Neurosurgery Suites in HC2 on the USC Health Science Campus.
