Born and educated in his native Poland, Dr. Miroslaw Smogorzewski conducted his fellowship in Renal Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital in London, UK before coming to Southern California as a research fellow in Nephrology at the LAC+USC Medical Center (now known as Los Angeles General Medical Center). While in Poland, Dr. Smogorzewski was the Chief of the Dialysis Unit at the Medical Academy in Warsaw. Dr. Smogorzewski is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
In addition to his teaching and academic responsibilities, Dr. Smogorzewski is affiliated with the Los Angeles General Medical Center and Keck Hospital of USC. Throughout his career, Dr. Smogorzewski has published over 130 papers and 26 chapters. For more than 20 years of his academic life, he was an NIH grant Co-Investigator on Uremia. His research and special interests include calcium metabolism/cystolic calcium and signal transduction in uremia, and the role of parathyroid hormone as a uremic toxin. He was an investigator in the African American Study of Kidney Disease (AASK) study and AASK cohort study. Currently, he is an investigator in the APOLLO study in kidney transplantation. In addition, he collaborated on the editing of major nephrology textbooks and the KDIGO 2002 guidelines on mineral metabolism in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). For the proposed BEAT-PKD study using his clinical trial experience, Dr. Smogorzewski will serve as a co-investigator and assist in the recruitment, consenting, and enrolling of Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) subjects for the trial at the USC Keck Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Clinic.
