You may be seen in a hospital-based outpatient department when you see a Keck Medicine of USC physician or health care provider. A hospital-based outpatient department is an outpatient practice where you can consult with physicians or other health care providers in a space licensed by a hospital. These hospital-based outpatient departments promote increased collaboration between hospitals and physicians to serve your health care needs better. The location where you are scheduled to receive services might be a hospital-based outpatient department and, therefore, may have higher costs than the same service provided in a non-hospital-based setting. The usual range for an office visit in a hospital-based outpatient department is $214-$2,500. This fee includes the office visit with your physician. It does not include any ancillary services or procedures that may occur during your visit. Your actual liability will depend upon the actual services rendered. You may check with your health insurance company, for more information about seeking services at other locations that may cost less than a hospital-based outpatient department.
According to Medicare billing rules, when you see a physician in a non-licensed location or office setting, all services and expenses are bundled in a single charge. When you see a physician in a hospital-based outpatient practice, physician and hospital charges are submitted separately. For patients with insurance, physician services are processed under physician benefits. Hospital services are processed under hospital benefits. Depending on your insurance plan, providing services in a hospital-based outpatient department costs more and may result in greater out-of-pocket expenses. The hospital and professional bills will be on one consolidated patient statement. Our goal is to provide an organized billing experience by offering visibility and transparency to the patient’s financial obligations. If you have questions about billing, please contact Keck Medicine of USC’s Customer Service at (855) 532-5729.
Making informed health care purchasing decisions is important. Ask your insurance company if your benefit plan covers facility charges in a hospital-based outpatient department and how much is covered or will be applied to your deductible or subject to coinsurance or co-pays. Depending on your insurance coverage, you may pay more for certain services and procedures if services are rendered at a hospital-based outpatient department. We urge you to review your insurance benefits or contact your insurance carrier to determine what your policy will pay and what out-of-pocket expenses you may incur.
