Meet Frances Chow, MD

Dr. Chow is a neuro-oncologist at Keck Medicine of USC, who specializes in neurosurgery and neurology.

Her role model is a childhood favorite.

“I have always looked up to Mister Rogers. As a child, I remember him discussing difficult and scary topics in a kind, gentle and honest manner. Behind the scenes, he led children’s education initiatives and revolutionized television broadcasting. In so many ways, he provided comfort and touched the lives of millions.”

Medical school offered an opportunity to make a difference.

“I have always been fascinated by the power and complexity of the human brain. I went to medical school to become an expert in the brain and make a difference in the lives of patients with neurological diseases.”

She’s learned valuable lessons from her patients.

“My patients serve as a constant reminder to make the most of each day, because life is short. There’s no reason to leave something for tomorrow, if it can be done now — whether that may be pursuing our dreams or spending time with our families.”

Helping her patients provides many rewards.

“My role is to walk alongside my patients through their journey with cancer — from diagnosis to treatment. The most rewarding part of my job is being able to educate, inform and guide my patients to help them make the best decisions regarding their care.”

She’s witnessed promising advances in the treatment of brain tumors.

“In my lifetime, I believe we will find a cure for malignant brain tumors. We are on the brink of discovering a more effective treatment with recent revolutions in immunotherapy, targeted therapy and personalized medicine.”

Finding new treatments for neurological conditions is a key goal.

“I conduct translational research to develop clinical trials featuring novel treatments. I’m particularly interested in immunotherapy and its effects on cancer and the body.”

Teamwork is why she calls Keck Medicine home.

“It takes a team to treat brain tumors. At an academic medical center, like Keck Medicine, I have the opportunity to work with leading experts in the field. Together, we collaborate to provide the best care for our patients.”
