Dr. Shankar is a hematologist and medical oncologist at Keck Medicine of USC who specializes in treating cancers affecting solid organs and the blood system.

Here’s what you won’t find on his resume.

Becoming a doctor was always his dream.

“From the time I was a kid, I knew I wanted to be a physician. There are more than 30 physicians in my family, so I was exposed to the field early, and I’ve always been inspired by the role physicians play in society.”

His free time is all about family.

“I am the father of three incredible children, and I value spending time with them more than anything.”

Visiting more countries tops his bucket list.

“Southeast Asia has been my favorite travel destination so far because the food, cultures and sights were incredible. I’d like to visit more international destinations in the future. Running a marathon — I have completed three half-marathons to date — and learning to play golf are also on my personal bucket list.”

He’s a big sports fan.

“I’m not sure I would trade careers with anyone, because I love what I do. But if I wasn’t a physician, I think I would have gone into sports journalism.”

Providing support to patients is deeply fulfilling.

“The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is to always do what is best for the patient. Patients often come to us in a vulnerable state, scared about a potentially lethal diagnosis. Helping them through this incredibly difficult time with a good outcome is very rewarding.”

His family motivates him to provide the best care possible.

“I want them to be proud knowing I am doing all that I can to help people in need.”

Building solid relationships with patients is a priority.

“My bedside manner is approachable and friendly. I try to understand what the patient is going through and help alleviate their stress and uncertainty while building our doctor-patient relationship.”

Here’s what he’d say to medical students considering a career in oncology.

“Cancer is beatable. We are making incredible strides in cancer care, and I am optimistic that we will be able to cure many more cancers with ongoing medical advancements.”

Keck Medicine offers access to innovative advancements in cancer care.

“I chose to practice at an academic medical center because the focus on research is inspiring. Access to groundbreaking medications is a critical resource in cancer care often available only through clinical trials. Here at Keck Medicine of USC, we take pride in the ability to offer our patients these valuable, innovative solutions.”

The focus on patient-centered care sets Keck Medicine apart.

“At Keck Medicine, the quality of the physicians and the tremendous resources at my disposal are unparalleled. Our academic medical center offers the highest quality of patient care with a personalized and tailored approach.”
