Dr. Sang-Hoon Ahn, a medical oncologist at Keck Medicine of USC

Dr. Ahn is a medical oncologist at Keck Medicine of USC who specializes in treating colorectal cancer and blood diseases.

Here’s what you won’t find on his resume.

He’s a devoted husband and sports fan.

“I cherish the special moments spent with my wife, talking about the small things happening in our lives over cups of coffee.

When I’m not working, I enjoy watching European soccer games. Whenever possible, I also find fulfillment in traveling abroad to engage in medical missionary work.”

His favorite movie was a surprise.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the 2009 movie ‘3 Idiots.’ I initially underestimated it due to its funny title. But I was pleasantly surprised by its blend of humor and profound themes. The film’s messages about pursuing one’s passions and challenging conventional norms really stood out to me.”

Engaging with patients is deeply rewarding.

“I became a doctor because I am passionate about human communication and connection. Medicine allows me to understand and help people, and the opportunity to engage with people on a personal level and contribute positively to their health and well-being is incredibly fulfilling.”

Supporting his patients is a privilege.

“Seeing my cancer patients endure such a challenging battle deeply motivates me to be the best physician I can be. I strive to fulfill multiple roles for them: counselor, helper, friend and at times even a surrogate family member.

It’s an honor to support them through their journey, offering not just medical expertise but also empathy, encouragement and unwavering support. Their resilience and courage inspire me every day to provide compassionate care and make a meaningful difference in their lives.”

The biggest game changers in his field?

“Two of the most impactful treatments for cancer today are targeted therapy and immunotherapy. They both represent significant advancements in personalized medicine.”

He’s optimistic about continued progress.

“Even in the face of advanced stages of cancer, there is hope that one day it may be managed similarly to chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. While challenging to cure outright, advancements in treatment are making it increasingly possible to improve each patient’s quality of life.”

Keck Medicine stands out for its supportive culture.

“Keck Medicine of USC offers abundant opportunities for research. We have world-class clinicians and a supportive working environment with friendly coworkers. This combination creates an exceptional workplace that fosters both professional growth and personal satisfaction.”
