State-of-the-Art Life Support Technology and Care
If your heart or lungs aren’t working properly, you may need advanced life support. The USC Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Program offers a technology known as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, to care for people who are critically ill.
ECMO takes over the work of the heart and lungs to add oxygen to the blood and pump it throughout the body. In addition to ECMO, our expert cardiac physicians also implant and manage a variety of temporary life-support devices. Whether you need short- or long-term specialized life support treatment, we will be your dedicated partner in care.
- Your care team includes experts in cardiothoracic surgery, intensive care medicine, and nurses and respiratory therapists with additional training in caring for patients who are receiving ECLS.
- ECMO is a highly specialized treatment available only at the most advanced medical centers.
