Cardiologist Michael W. Fong, MD, combines his specialties in advanced heart failure and heart transplantation with his knowledge of mechanical circulatory support and the design and study of mobile apps to monitor and impact cardiovascular health.
Dr. Fong’s research focuses on the use of technology and new medications to reduce heart failure and hospital admissions and improve heart health. He has received grant funding to explore issues such as obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, post–heart failure hospitalizations and the value of home-based cardiac rehab interventions.
He is a member of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) Cardiology Workgroup and the DHS Clinical Resource Management (CRM) Heart Failure Clinical Content Team. He is a popular invited lecturer at Grand Rounds and medical symposia on topics ranging from post-transplant care, cardiomyopathy and surgically implanted ventricular assist devices to diabetes and heart failure.
Dr. Fong grew up in Canada, where, he says, “Health care is universal, but resources are rationed; people are friendly but always direct, and seasons mean you constantly have to adapt to change.”
