Tammy Capretta serves as chief transformation and risk officer for Keck Medicine of USC, supporting growth within Keck Medicine during a time of unprecedented expansion of the health system. She is responsible for assessing potential partnership opportunities and leading cultural transformation, as well as risk management, compliance and clinical staff credentialing.
Capretta’s integral role in many of Keck Medicine’s expansion efforts includes ensuring the smooth transition and integration of new entities into the health system, including USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, USC Student Health, Los Angeles Cardiology Associates and the Las Vegas Culinary Health Center.
In her career with Keck Medicine, Capretta has been instrumental in managing behind-the-scenes work associated with readiness planning and due diligence efforts. She leads two offices she established and implemented: the Office of Integrated Risk Management and the Office of Integrated Credentialing. Her leadership with Keck Medicine’s Culture of Safety initiative has brought the health system national recognition. She also leads health care compliance in the USC Office of Ethics and Compliance.
As a former nurse, Capretta approaches hospital operations from the perspective of a dedicated and experienced frontline caregiver. To better support health care workers and empower them to uphold high standards of quality and safety, she established a professionalism program and the award-winning Care for the Caregiver employee support program.
Capretta began her career as a public health nurse before joining Keck Medicine in 1991 as the chief operating officer for USC Care Medical Group. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Texas Christian University and a master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Los Angeles. Capretta has served as the chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Compliance Officers’ Forum, and she was a featured speaker for President Barack Obama’s task force on Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program.
