Neuro-ophthalmologist Kimberly Gokoffski, MD, PhD, maintains a robust clinical and surgical practice treating conditions that impact the connection between the eye and brain. Among her specialties are optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, pseudotumor cerebri and other conditions that damage the visual pathways in the brain.
She also treats patients with thyroid eye disease, myasthenia gravis and strabismus. Her surgical practice encompasses strabismus and optic nerve fenestration.
Dr. Gokoffski’s research focuses on regenerating the optic nerve, the cable connecting the eye to the brain, which has little capacity to self-repair in response to disease or trauma. Her lab is working on developing a technology to help damaged optic nerves repair themselves.
Her numerous career honors include a Mentored Career Development Award from the National Eye Institute for her research into retinal cell regeneration, the Dr. Douglas H. Johnson Award for glaucoma research from BrightFocus Foundation and the Thomas and Susan Carlow Young Investigator Award from the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.
Away from work, she loves dancing, especially salsa and Polish folk dancing. She is fluent in Polish.
“Most important is creating and maintaining open lines of communication. I am here to help my patients understand what is responsible for their symptoms and what their options are.
I don't make decisions for my patients but instead help my patients make informed decisions for themselves.”
