About Steven L. Giannotta, MD

Steven Giannotta, MD, is a neurosurgeon who specializes in cerebrovascular disorders affecting the blood vessels and blood flow to the brain, including:

  • Aneurysms
  • Malformations in the brain
  • Strokes

His expertise in cranial base surgery makes him a resource for treating complex benign brain tumors such as acoustic neuromas and meningiomas. He also treats sudden, severe facial pain (trigeminal neuralgia) and hemifacial spasm.

For many years, his research interests have focused on why congenital arteriovenous malformations (AVM) form in the brain at birth. His laboratory is dedicated to uncovering the biology of the brain that causes these malformations.

Dr. Giannotta grew up in a blue-collar neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. In high school, he became interested in psychoanalysis, which led him to a medical career and to neurosurgery. He joined Keck Medicine of USC in 1980 and serves as chair of neurological surgery.

In his free time, Dr. Giannotta enjoys driving and collecting vintage sports cars, something he has done since his college years. Among his early acquisitions were a 1959 Ford Thunderbird, a 1957 Jaguar and a 1957 Corvette.

“When patients are faced with neurosurgery, they are often petrified. They need appropriate information to make decisions about their treatment. I try to be as helpful as I can and tell them about the alternatives for care provided at Keck Medicine, which may not be available elsewhere. I take my time and give them the time to select the treatment plan they are most comfortable with.

Part of my care model is to assemble the best and brightest in neurosurgery at Keck Medicine and to make sure each patient is treated by someone with a national or growing reputation in their specific need. We have the best team available, and we encourage patients and families to have confidence in our model.
