Your spine is made up of bones in your back, called vertebrae. Between these bones are soft structures, called discs, which are considered the cushions for your back. These discs are surrounded by a tough outer layer and act like shock absorbers for your bones. Sometimes, these discs can get pushed out from their normal place by an injury or through gradual age-related wear and tear. This is called a herniated disc or slipped/ruptured disc.

A herniated disc can put pressure on your spinal nerves. Depending on the size and location of the herniated disc, your symptoms may vary.
